DANCES TO A BEAT
Dances to a Beat (DTB) is a technique for composing instant choreography based on improvisation, repetition and rhythm. It’s an artistic practice that was created by a dance artist Kati Korosuo in 2013. As an artistic program in Höyhentämö, Dances to a Beat consists of different kinds of performances, workshops and a festival called Festival of Instant Choreography.
DTB develops many fundamental dance skills, including movement precision, articulate musicality, versatile expression and creativity. The technique challenges its practitioners to be present in the moment, avoid judging themselves and their own choices, and to intuitively trust the information that is inherently in their body. In this practice the emotional and physical history of each participant is both present yet possible to set aside. Practicing DTB helps participants to understand and appreciate each individual’s uniqueness as well as seeing one’s value in the bigger picture.
The artistic director of the program is Kati Korosuo.
